It's Only A Game
by Jason Marriner

Jason admits to having been "a bit of a nuisance" in the past. In this, his first book, he tells his story in a frank and honest way ... and what a story it is. This is no run-of-the-mill series of "we done them" and "we run them" tales, but a proper account which blows the lid off the deceitful shenanigans that Donal MacIntyre got up to in the name of "investigative reporting". How 344 hours of  covertly shot BBC video was cunningly edited down to an hour to paint an unjust and prejudiced picture of him. He tells the story of the disgraceful court case (trial by TV) and his time "away" at Her Majesty's pleasure. And you'll absolutely love reading the actual court transcripts of how Jason's legal team put the screws on the self-important MacIntyre in court, tied him up in knots and made him sound like a dishonest egotistical pillock who seemed to believe that he was above the law.

This is a book that you simply MUST read mate, 'cos this could so easily be YOU!

The Naughty Nineties: Football's Coming Home?
Martin King, Martin Knight

Football has reinvented itself. As television money has poured into the game, the traditional working class fans have poured out. Not by choice but by economic necessity. Their places on the terraces have been replaced by posh seats and those in charge of the game are especially proud that, according to them, the football hooligan has at last been eliminated from the landscape. But how true is this much-vaunted theory? Martin King brings his story up-to-date in this book. Ironically, he finds that although football hooligans are now a minority, their maturity, experience and dedication are higher than ever. The firms are smaller but far more dangerous. The style and character of the mobs have changed as has the author, who finds himself evolving from participant to observer as the decade wears on. Despite the picture painted by the media of soccer violence in previous decades, only in the 1990s is it truly highly organized. Most of the confrontations occur away from stadiums, sometimes on days when no matches are being played, so King questions whether "football hooliganism" is in fact the correct description for such activity.

Steaming In
Colin Ward

First published in 1989, STEAMING IN is now acknowledged as the definitive account of terrace life in the 1970s and '80s. Unvarnished, unflinching, it tells the story of Colin Ward's experiences at Arsenal, Chelsea and England matches, at home and away. From Highbury to Luxembourg, Turin and Istanbul, Ward charts the camaraderie and confrontations, the hatred, the fear -- and the unexpected friendships between rival fans. By turns disturbing, horrifying and hilarious, it is astonishing reading, and draws a vivid picture of numerous colourful terrace characters. Countless words have been bandied about on the subject of football hooliganism by politicians, journalists and sociologists. Now re-issued with a new Preface by the author, STEAMING IN shows us what it was really like, and reminds us just how much football has changed. Controversial and provocative, it has become that rarest of gems -- a classic of football writing.

Top Boys: True Stories of Football's Hardest Men
Cass Pennant

This is a hard-hitting, unflinchingly honest testament to life with some of the biggest firms in football history. This sequel packs an even harder punch, bringing together the frontline faces, the top boys who ran the legendary firms from all over the country. From genuine hard men who have literally fought for their clubs to other eccentric football fans who have gone to great lengths to support their side, the cross-section of well known faces is very broad, and all of them are prepared to give honest answers to the sort of questions even a plain clothes football intelligence officer wouldn't dare to ask. Riveting.

Terrace Legends
Cass Pennant, Martin King

Meet the men who, for decades, have ruled the football terraces. They are the faces behind the biggest firms in football history; behind the rucks, the rules and the respect. They have caused chaos for the public and the press and struck fear into rival fans that have crossed their path. In this ground-breaking book, the men behind the mobs have joined forces to reveal their experiences as key figures in the most notorious terrace fights. Never before has such a wide-ranging book on this phenomenon appeared because never before have the men of violence been prepared to co-operate. From the bovver boys of the sixties and seventies to the football casuals of the eighties, the names central to the biggest firms - the names that were to become the stuff that terrace legends were made of - have all been tracked down and interviewed. They tell their stories in this essential book.

Gilly
Gilroy Shaw, Martin King

Gilroy Shaw and his football gang The Bridge Boys caused havoc wherever they travelled to watch the Wolverhampton Wanderers play. Shaw was the first person in the West Midlands to be banned by police from all matches; he featured in a BBC undercover documentary in 2002 and is currently banned from all international and domestic games. Here he tells it how it really is and gives an insider account of the match day mayhem and madness.

Inside the Forest Executive Crew
Gary Boatsy Clarke, Martin King

Gary 'Boatsy' Clarke is one of the founder members of The Forest Executive Crew, one of football's most feared firms. Clarke held a season ticket at Nottingham Forest for 5 years before being the first person in Nottinghamshire to receive a civil banning order. He has also been arrested over 30 times at games and has 15 convictions for football-related incidents. He has received five banning orders and served three terms in prison for football violence. A real look at football hooliganism that leaves no stones unturned.

Grass
Martin King, Martin Knight, Howard Marks, Phil Sparrowhawk

"Grass" is the incredible story of Phil Sparrowhawk, a working-class boy with gambling in his blood. Like most punters, he enjoyed an incredible run of luck, but finally rolled the dice once too often. Coming from a family of bookmakers, he wanted to strike out on his own and before he had come of age he had accumulated a small fortune from street trading. He then staked his entire capital on Njinsky in the 1970 Derby - and won. With his now large capital base, he launched a business importing clothes. Enter Howard Marks (aka Mr Nice), who was enthused by Phil's Far East connections and introduced him to the far more lucrative world of the 'movement of beneficial herbs' - or drug smuggling, as it is known to the authorities. Phil struck out on his own and from his new base in Thailand became involved in many large-scale cannabis deals, whilst at the same time developing highly successful legitimate businesses. Sailing close to the wind became Phil's preferred choice of travel through life. Read of his encounters with Greenpeace, Mother Teresa, gangsters and leading politicians, Lord Moynihan, religious cults, former pop singers and many other diverse characters as his life became more and more surreal. The winning streak came to an end when the US Drug Enforcement Agency closed in. Phil's £30m fortune was promptly confiscated and he spent the next four years in two of Thailand's most notorious jails before being extradited to the US, where he served further time in a series of penitentiaries. His spirit was nearly broken as he battled to survive in those medieval environments, where life was cheap and the drugs even cheaper. "Grass" details the life of an ordinary young man, with a taste for adventure, who ended up on the most extraordinary journey. Sit back, take a deep breath and enjoy.

Mr. Nice
Howard Marks

During the mid-1980s, Marks had 43 aliases and 25 companies, all laundering money from dealing cannabis. He moved 30 tonnes of cannabis from Pakistan to the US. After a world-wide operation, he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years at a State Penitentiary in Indiana, but was released in 1995 after serving seven years. This is his own story.
